The Session
All parents/carers and children enter pre-school via the cloakroom. This is where you change your child into their indoor shoes and hang up their coats, bags etc. You will find a box labelled with your child’s name where you can leave their shoes. You may wait either in the cloakroom or in the book/puzzle room to be let into the session.
The morning session starts at 9.30 am (except Tuesdays and Wednesdays from February - July, when sessions start at 9.15 am). Parents/carers and children are let into the main room from the book/puzzle room. The children will be ticked in the register by a member of staff. Please check that your child has been registered before you leave. Once all the parents/carers have left the cloakroom door (and all other outside doors) will be locked. This means that the children are safe inside and any visitors must come to the side door, where they can only be let in by a member of staff.
The first part of the session is a free play session, where the children can choose what they would like to do, and can be encouraged to try new activities if necessary. During this time we have a short group activity where we count the children present, complete the day of the week and weather boards, and younger children choose an activity for our teddy and dress him accordingly. Older children are encouraged to discuss any news they would like to share, and may bring in any items they would like to show the group.
At 10.45 am we begin to tidy away, and the children are all encouraged to help. At 10.55 am the children are taken into the side rooms, usually divided into two groups of older and younger children, for a short session of group activities. They all then join together for a drink and snack, and to sing songs and play games. Once a week at this time they are given the opportunity to use musical instruments.
The next part of the session starts at approximately 11.30 am, and is outside in our play area when it is warm enough, and inside the main room at other times. It is primarily a time for physical play on our climbing frame, trampoline, rockers etc. (and lots more when we are outside), but there are also tabletop activities available at this time.
Once a week we have a session of Music and Movement at this time. During colder weather the timetable is adjusted slightly to allow the children to play outside for 10 minutes, before coming inside at approximately 11.30 am. At 12.00 pm the children have story time for 15 minutes, and the parents and carers are let in to the main room from the cloak room to collect them. In the busy room there will be a peg with your child’s name on. Please check this at the end of each session as this is where you will find any correspondence from the committee and any work your child may have done.
These times are correct for the 9.30 am sessions. The 9.15 am and 12.00pm sessions have the same structure but obviously different times.
